I think Opera and Ballet when done well serve as a platform for spontaneous and inspired work by the soloist that representing. Much like the concerto form in the symphony.
I had a nice opportunity to see it done correctly this afternoon. American Ballet Theater Winter’s Tale, music composed by Joby Talbot is really enjoyable.
I don’t really know much about ballet so it’s a good thing no one cares about my opinion. Here it is anyway. The dancing is so graceful and the choreography is very emotional.
The music is really fitting and creates great opportunities for the dancers to easily express themselves in the various emotional scenes. The musical language is cinematic and perfectly reflects our expectation of what the symphony orchestra should sound today.
Highly recommended!
